Chitra performing a classical dance

Chitra Banerjee, a very experienced and creative Indian dancer-choreographer, one of the well known exponents of the Indian folk  and Rabindra dances, trained in Kolkata, lives in London and performs in Kolkata and in the major cities including London in the U.K.

She was trained in the Indian classical dance forms, but enjoys and is the most creative and outstanding in the traditional Indian folk  and Rabindra dances.

Indian folk dances have special characteristics and styles connected with the  particular Indian regions.  They were created for and are generally performed by the people of those regions. For example, the Bhangra comes from the Panjab, the Rajasthani is from Rajasthan, the Garba is from Gujerat, the Bihu is from Assam, and the Chhou, the Bou, the Jumur and the Santali dances are from Bengal.

Rabindra dance is an amalgam of different Indian dance forms transformed into a homogeneous unity of a poetic beauty.  Chitrangada, Chandalika, Shyama, Balmiki Pratibha, Shapmochan, Mayar Khela and Taser Desh are some of the greatest Rabindra dance dramas.  These are story-based modern neo-classical dance dramas creatred on the foundation of the Rabindra lyrics and tunes.
